Cullers Einführung ist Pflichtlektüre für diejenigen, die sich endlich in dem Wust von Fachbegriffen und diversen theoretischen Ansätzen zurechtfinden wollen.Der Autor beginnt mit der Beantwortung von simpel erscheinenden Fragen: Was ist Theorie? Was ist Literatur? Welchen "Sinn" hat Literatur überhaupt? Was ist Interpretation? um nur ein paar zu nennen.Die Kapitel sind sehr kurz gehalten, aber äußerst inhaltsvoll, so dass ein einmaliges Lesen einzelner Abschnitte nicht ausreicht. Wenn man sich aber die Mühe macht dieses Werk, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, zu studieren, hat man mit einiger Sicherheit einen guten Einstieg in das weite Feld der Literaturtheorie gefunden. Eine knappe Bibliographie verweist zudem auf die wichtigsten weiterführenden Werke zu den unterschiedlichen Themenbereichen.Fazit: Zusammen mit Kindlers Metzler Lexikon Literatur- und Kulturtheorie sowie Abrams A Glossary of Literary Terms bildet dieses kleine Büchlein die Heilige Schrift für den Literatur- und Theoriefanatiker.
Literary theory is a pretty imposing topic, and it's especially imposing to people like myself who don't have a liberal arts education. So, I was really happy to find Culler's introduction to literary theory. Rather than hiding behind a taxonomy of the various schools of thought, he discusses and attempts to answer some difficult questions: What is theory? What is literature? Why might we care about the answers to these questions? My take on this book is that Culler has successfully managed to convey some of the difficult and interesting challenges of theory to uninitiated readers without dumbing down the subject too much. Recommended.
