Henry N. Cobb is a founding partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, directing numerous projects since its formation in 1955. His practice has embraced a wide variety of building types around the world, most notably including the John Hancock Tower (now 200 Clarendon St.), the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston, Fountain Place in Dallas, Place Ville Marie in Montreal, the Harvard Center for Government and International Studies, the US Bank tower (formerly Library Tower) in Los Angeles, and the Portland Museum of Art, Maine. His current projects include the Four Seasons Private Residences Boston and the International African American Museum in Charleston, S.C. Born and raised in Boston, Cobb and his wife, Joan Spaulding Cobb, live in New York.

But the struggle of architecture to speak and act within and against the embrace of power has resulted in some of the most fascinating and profoundly moving manifestations of human intelligence..."The above quotation is found in the last moments of the last chapter of this profoundly moving volume, which spans seventy years of a life devoted to architecture (eighty, if you count the childhood painting that opens the book) and yet somehow fits into your coat pocket. The insight into the centrality of the 'struggle' is an apt coda, because above all, it is precisely that struggle which gives this volume its dimension. This is a volume that prefers depth over glossiness, critical review over casual revue, and diving in over showing off.As such, in spirit anyway, the book that 'Words & Works' most closely resembles, more than any monograph, is 'The Education of Henry Adams' (a fellow Bostonian!)-- documenting a consequential life lived within, carried by, and struggling "within and against" a changing world, changing cities and contexts and changing pedagogies and perceptions. And like Adams' memoir, it isn't the exquisite writing (though it is in fact exquisitely written) nor the fresh material for historians and scholars to pore over (of which there is an abundance), but the enduring relevance, even urgency, of its wisdom that makes this book so necessary as we navigate our own turbulent future-- both within the discipline of architecture, and otherwise.
Cobb has not only designed some landmark buildings of the later 20th century, he has always thought as much about what he did as he has managed to realize his vision. Perhaps only a Bostonian of his intellect could have reckoned with his own work for the Hancock Tower in deeply self-conscious and socially conscientious terms. According to his own wishes, the book is a brick, but, in accordance with Louis Kahn, you can ask it what it wants to be and the answers are exciting!

This book is so goooooood.If “Heroic†was the best Boston architecture book in 2015, Henry Cobb’s “Words and Works†is the probably the best (Boston) architecture book in 2018.It is a compilation of seven decades of writings by Cobb. Partner of Pei, Chairman of GSD, and the architect of John Hancock tower of Boston Copley Square, Cobb has paved the practice and the education during the pivotal era of American urbanism and architecture. If Gropius was an apostle of Modernism, Cobb was an evangelist of Modernism (But then his later works POMO, then again, minimal technology driven Modernism) Cobb’s Words are as good as his Works. They are well thought out and acutely sharp. Following are three of my favorites.On Zeckendorf, he writes,â€If power is not put in motion by energy that is entrepreneurial in nature, there is unlikely to be an opportunity for architecture. Furthermore, while accumulation of power is not an essential precondition, manipulation of power is... something that, again, I began to learn from Zeckendorf and confirmed in my own experience of life.†Cobb says that power is not a matter of scale, but use; likewise, not a matter of monopoly, but manipulation. Cobb says at one point that there is no one with absolute power, there are powerful institutions (corporate client, city officiers, developers, opinion leaders, etc). What one does is to weave between the powerfuls and a person who does that is the one who actually does something meaningfully big in the city.On Hancock Tower, he writes, “To each of these questions the answer, it seems to me, must finally be both yes and no. This persistently disturbing ambiguity, in which the building discloses the anxiety of its predicament, perhaps explains why, amon all my built works, the Hancock Tower is as close as I have ever come to poetry. [...] Despite forcefulness of its gesture, the tower remains virtually speechless, and this resolute self-denial is, in the end, both its triumph and its tragedy.†Cobb’s discretely restraint style, both in his words and works, is well shown in this quote. Anyone who has experienced Hancock at Back Bay or across the Charles River will absolutely agree to the sayings by Cobb. In the book, Cobb writes exetremely interesting stories on the whole development of the Hancock Tower, which I thought was the apex of the book. The competition of the Pru and the Hancock, the resistance by architecture gerus(MIT’s Anderson & Harvard’s Sert) on building Hancock next to Trinity Church, bluffing of Hancock to BRA on possible relocation of Hancock’s HQ to Chicago if not permitted to build, outcry of the fallings of windows during construction, etc. It is really a mid-century urban drama that proclaims, a paraphrase of Roman saying, “Boston was not built in a day.â€In discussing with Peter Eisenman during his tenure at GSD, he says, “... there are many ways of being useful. Too often we deliver into the world graduates preoccupied with unfullfillable dreams, dreams that they will take with them -fruitlessly and bitterly- to their graves. Instead we should be arming our students with the capacity to invent, pursue,and fulfill realizable goals, to discover their own modes of usefulness. This is in part a problem of skills and in part a problem of attitude, habit of mind.†His leadership philosophy at DOA, GSD could be summarized as above.As much as Cobb’s works are awesome, then and now; Cobb’s words are awesome, again, then and now. One side note. Anyone interested in Boston architecture or evolution of GSD, this will book will also serve to that purpose. Honestly, Henry needs to write more (a Memoir ?) for the future generation.
